Madra rua

The common Irish name for a fox: madra rua, literally “red dog.” No separate animal category, no fable required. A fox is the red member of the dog family.

Ó Dónaill’s dictionary also gives madra alla, “wild dog,” for a wolf. The language names both animals by resemblance to the familiar one: the dog gone red, and the dog gone wild.
