Mizen Head, Co. Cork
The most southwesterly point of mainland Ireland. The signal station was built in 1909 to reduce the wrecks that had been mounting on the rocks below. Access required crossing a fifty-metre sea gorge, so the Commissioners of Irish Lights held a design competition. The winner, Noel Ridley of London, proposed a reinforced concrete arch bridge. It was the first reinforced concrete bridge built in Ireland. The bridge sits 45 metres above the water. It stood for a hundred years and was an exact replica of itself when replaced in 2011. The signal station is now a museum. The view is open Atlantic.
