May Day rowan

Rowan branches were hung above doors across rural Ireland until the 1960s. Believed to protect the household from fairy theft of butter, milk, and occasionally infants. Cut on May Eve, hung overnight, left until the leaves browned. The practice predates Christianity by at least 1,500 years.
